The Madsen Group began its journey as a small diesel shop on the harbourfront in St. John’s in 1963, where E.W. Madsen opened his doors to the local marine industry. Mr. Madsen had been trained as a machinist in Denmark before emigrating to Canada in 1928 and worked in the marine service industry for many years before settling in Newfoundland.
Mr. Madsen’s focus on customer satisfaction and high-quality workmanship quickly earned the loyalty of customers throughout the province and the region. Major fuel injection manufacturers of the day such as Bosch, Lucas, CAV, Bryce, L’Orange, and Roosa Master recognized the importance of a strategically located shop offering quality and service by granting the company status as an authorized service centre for their products.
The company soon added governor service to its portfolio and was authorized by Woodward Governor Company. Turbocharger repairs soon supplemented its service offerings. In the 1980s, DISS became an authorized representative for Alfa Laval. The service facility on George Street was expanded into a full diesel service centre that employed a dozen technicians and support staff.
The 1990s saw an expansion into Halifax, Nova Scotia, to better service the Maritimes. By the 2000s, DISS had launched an engine and generator company and a heavy equipment dealership to better service its growing customer base. The company then expanded into Quebec and Ontario, representing Woodward Governor and a select line of engine and turbine-related electronic, mechanical, and power-management products to a growing customer base.
Diesel Injection Sales and Service was renamed Madsen Group in 2015 to better represent the diversity and expertise of the companies. However, each company is built on the solid foundation of the values established by E.W. Madsen in 1963 – premium product lines, quality workmanship, and excellent service.
